HONOLULU – The Hawai‘i Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB) today announced Meet Hawai‘i will be welcoming the Goldschmidt Conference at the Hawai‘i Convention Center from July 10-15, 2022. Organized by the Geochemical Society and the European Association of Geochemistry, the Goldschmidt Conference is the premier international meeting on geochemistry and is committed to improving our understanding of the earth and solar system.

“We are pleased to welcome the Goldschmidt Conference to the 1.1 million-square-foot Hawai’i Convention Center,” said John Reyes, senior vice president and chief MCI sales officer of Meet Hawai‘i. “This conference has a special resonance here in Hawaiʻi where attendees from all over the world will be inspired to explore, learn and embrace Hawai‘i’s unique geological ecosystem.”

The Goldschmidt Conference is a hybrid event expected to attract more than 1,500 attendees to the Hawai‘i Convention Center and an additional 1,000 participants online. Attendees will encompass expertise and backgrounds in fields such as organic geochemistry, high and low-temperature geochemistry, petrology, meteoritics, fluid-rock interaction, and isotope geochemistry.

“Hawai‘i provides the perfect backdrop and gathering place because it has a long history of environmental stewardship that echoes our ethos,” said Kevin Johnson, executive director at Geochemical Society. “Hawai‘i is a world-class destination and prime outdoor classroom for the sciences, and we’re confident the state will deliver an exceptional meeting experience for our attendees.”

The Geochemical Society will welcome participation by secondary and college-level science teachers, as well as high school science student groups. One of the conference’s major themes, “Geology Through a Cultural Lens – Diverse Perspectives on the Natural World,” will feature presenters from Hawai‘i, including Ku‘ulei Higashi Kanahele of the Edith Kanaka‘ole Foundation, Aurora Kagawa-Viviani, Noelani Puniwai, and Ivy Hāli‘imaile Andrade from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, and Aubrey Ke‘alohilani Matsuura from the University of Hawai‘i Maui College.

“The Goldschmidt Conference is a great example of an international event providing opportunities to elevate Hawaiʻi’s experts amongst their global peers, while engaging local students and educators with perspectives from around the world,” said Kalani Kaʻanāʻanā, Chief Brand Officer of the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority. “The focus of this gathering aligns well with Hawaiʻi’s sustainability initiatives and our strategic direction at the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority, because understanding the world we live in – down to the geochemistry of the land upon which we stand – reinforces our commitment to Mālama Kuʻu Home, or care for our beloved home.”
