Five Waipahu High School students attend music workshop at The White House

HONOLULU – Five Waipahu High School students received the opportunity of a lifetime when AEG Facilities, the management company for the Hawaii Convention Center, sponsored their trip to Washington, D.C., April 11-14, to attend “The History of Gospel Music,” workshop at The White House. This was a first time visit to the nation's capitol for each student.

Representing Hawaii's next generation of leaders, the teens selected were nominated by a teacher and had to meet several criteria, including a minimum 3.0 GPA, interest in the arts and/or music, participation in extra-curricular activities, and possession of leadership qualities or potential.

The Oahu teens were joined by 130 other middle school, high school, and college-level students from across the country for a series of interactive, educational sessions, hosted by the GRAMMY Museum and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Attendees participated in a question and answer session with the Smithsonian Museum of American Historys music manager Tim Prestige, a behind-the-scenes tour of the Howard University Gospel Choir, and a press conference at the Mayflower Hotel. The workshop culminated at The White House with Robert Santelli, executive director of the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles and musical guests Rodney Crowell, Rhiannon Giddens, Darlene Love, Lyle Lovett and Michelle Williams.

The Oahu students also explored the Greater Washington areas most prominent sites and attractions, including the Washington Monument, Cherry Blossom Festival, Lincoln Memorial, World War I and II Memorials, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and received a U.S. Capitol Tour courtesy of U.S. Senators Brian Schatz and Mazie Hironos offices.

This is the second year that AEG Facilities has supported this initiative, since it began managing the Hawaii Convention Center in 2014. AEG Facilities, through its parent company AEG, leveraged its relationship with the GRAMMY Museum to provide this opportunity to the teens. AEG sponsored all the costs for the students and one chaperone, including hotel, airfare and a stipend.
